naima aouni
1987, BE

Naima Aouni is a Belgian artist from Antwerp. Aouni's portraits are dark, sometimes with a surrealistic touch, steeped in Western art history. Seventeenth-century art – especially the works of Caravaggio and Velazquez – grabbed Aouni’s attention from early on. The way in which these masters presented the human figure as a carrier of affects fascinated her immensely. In her own work the individual plays the leading role. The isolated figure is placed in an indeterminate space and seems to be thrown back on itself. Often overcome with melancholy, the portrayed expresses the human condition.
